Attracting Volunteers

New residents

My husband and I have lived in a lot of different communities.

Moving is not fun. But, we are community-minded, social people, so we seek organizations to join. We understand volunteering is the fastest and easiest way to create connections and make new friends.

Recently, we moved ‘home’ to the area I grew up in.

It is natural to gravitate towards the things one knows, so it is little surprise that the board of directors for a little country fair, which I attended faithfully as a child, was the first group I found, then joined.

Attracting volunteers is what makes events happen.
One weekend a year this stage hosts entertainers from near and far. This is one aspect of a two-day community-event which includes a horse show, cattle show, an exhibit hall, ball games, children’s activities, food services and much more. Attracting volunteers is critical to its success.

Look at this empty entertainment stage. Do you see nothing, or do you see possibilities?

I am reminded of memories from years gone by – the music, the laughter, the connections, the community – while at the same time imagining what this year’s event might look and feel like.

My bet is, because you are a volunteer, you are now imagining community gatherings from your life.

You are also thinking about how to attract the volunteers it will take to coordinate a two-day event and then wondering where you will find enough.

Back to your group…

When you think of attracting volunteers, how often do you consider those new to your community? How do you find people who have just moved in, or back? How will they find you? Is this something you have talked about within your group?

Everyone does not know

No matter what group we join someone inevitably says, “Everyone knows we need help!” Then they go on to explain ‘the problem is unique to their situation/community/region’.

Each time, we giggle.

Trust me, there are few new problems in this world. And, on the topic of attracting volunteers, your situation is not unique. I promise.

Invitations are still a ‘thing’.

Not each of you will have people join your group simply because they fondly recall a childhood memory of it. But, each of you has the opportunity to attract eager, willing volunteers, if you communicate.

No matter who you meet or where you go, every person is a potential new member of your group (when you begin thinking that way). Remember, people generally want to part of something, especially when asked.

Do people know your group exists?

Have you talked about your involvement with the group?

Have you let people know new members are welcome?

Have you invited anyone in a real way?

Do you ask people if they would like to help?

Have you talked about attracting volunteers?

These conversations can be tough. Especially within groups which have seen little turnover in membership, rely on only one of two people to do everything (sometimes because they like it that way), or in groups which are not very good at ensuring everyone around the table has a chance to speak freely. But, I do encourage you to start brainstorming about what your group might do to attract willing and eager volunteers.

Be brave!

People are always looking to be part of something. Invite them. Ask them. Offer them a ride, even.

Whatever way you decide to go about it, there are people out there looking to be part of your group; all you have to do is get better at letting people know they are welcome and wanted.

It starts with you.

For those who want to learn more about having this and other sometimes sticky conversations within your group I invite you to check out the online workshop I created specifically to help volunteer groups get on track in a fast, fun way.
